How to get to the Keukenhof Gardens
One of the perks of Keukenhof's popularity is that it's incredibly easy to get to. There are many different options depending on whether your priority is convenience, price or speed.
I personally decided to spend a little more and spend the night in a nice B&B in Lisse (Click here for the link!).
This way I could comfortably walk to Keukenhof in about 15 minutes in the morning.
However, you can easily reach Keukenhof from various major Dutch cities.9292is a great free website for planning trips within the Netherlands. Find out how to get to Keukenhof from Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport and Leiden.

Mistakes to avoid when visiting Keukenhof
Keukenhof can be a wonderful experience if you plan properly and avoid some key rookie mistakes. Here are some crucial mistakes to avoid if you want to appear sane.
1. Not booking tickets in advance
Click here to get your instant download skip-the-line tickets
Without further ado, Keukenhof is a madhouse for flower-hungry visitors of all ages, sizes and types (yes, you'll see quite a few Keukenhof dogs on display!)
This place is packed and the last thing you want to do is wait in line for a million years while buses full of other tourists with their pre-purchased tickets smugly glide past you! Also, it seems that in this day and age with timed tickets, pre-sale might even be mandatory.
I got my ticket online the night beforeGet your guidebookand used my mobile coupon to jump right in.
USE:If you're new to the GetYourGuide app, be sure to tap Reservations and download your mobile voucher.
Basically, what they are looking for is a QR code or barcode that they can scan. So if your ticket doesn't include it, don't look for the right coupon.
My friend Sophie had some issues with her voucher but after a quick visit to the information desk she was able to get a replacement ticket by forwarding her confirmation email to the (very friendly) member of staff on duty.
However, I preloaded my mobile voucher and it worked fine! I practically went straight in.
2. Assuming you see extensive fields of tulips
There is a common misconception (especially among those who live and breathe Instagram) that Keukenhof is where you would go in the Netherlands to have fun amidst an endless sea of colorful tulip fields.
This is not the case at all!
The Keukenhof is a large, well-kept garden with a variety of flower arrangements spread over different pavilions.
While you can get a glimpse of colorful flower fields from certain vantage points around the garden, your visit to Keukenhof doesn't give you the opportunity to walk among these fields or photograph them up close.
So if you want to do that, I recommend you read my articleFree tulip fields to visit for free in the Netherlands!
If you want to get a closer look at the tulip fields in Lisse, you can also rent a bike (separately at the entrance to Keukenhof) so you can cycle freely and explore the fields that way. Note, however, that many farms are privately owned, and you should not go there to take photos unless specifically permitted.

3. Dancing in the evenings... or on weekends and holidays
NOTE: Keukenhof 2022 has introduced timed tickets so this can help reduce crowds significantly. It doesn't matter when you visit. However, I still think that it will be much quieter during the week.
We decided to book a hotel in Lisse on a weekday so we could have a leisurely morning walk to Keukenhof and be there when the gates opened.
It was a beautiful, naively optimistic dream.
We slept in, drank our coffee too long and went to Keukenhof about 30 minutes after opening.
To our surprise and horror, the parking lot was ALREADY packed with tour buses and cars, all full of tourists just as hungry for photos as we were.
Luckily the gardens are large and the crowds thin out so we were able to enjoy a somewhat leisurely two hour stroll.
But by 11 a.m. everything was clear: camera-wielding zombies swarmed every street.
It was quite a spectacle and very overwhelming!
Although the gardens are beautiful, an afternoon visit would not do them justice!
Get here early in the morning (or maybe just before closing) to ensure you have the best possible experience without the crowds.
Also, avoid weekends, bank holidays, and Flower Parade day (unless you like getting elbowed in your face).

4. Wait before buying groceries locally
Unsurprisingly, eating out at Keukenhof can be incredibly expensive.
I'm talking €17.50 for a burger, fries and beer, which is about the price of your ticket!
While there are some reasonably priced options, after a rather mediocre coffee, I'll bet the cuisine here isn't quite Michelin-worthy, so I'd recommend picking up a few takeaways for a picnic.
That's totally allowed and the staff doesn't give a damn.

5. Don't take a card with you
Not only are Keukenhof Gardens vast, their web of winding paths is a bewildering tangle of confusion.
Blame it on my general lack of navigation skills, but there were several times I was convinced I was going in one direction and then ended up at the other end of the park.
There are free maps to use around the entrance. So be sure to get one!
So make sure you don't miss anything. Alternatively, be curious and download a PDF copyHere.
6. Dress cute instead of dressing warm
With all the stunning blooming flowers and the (often) blue sky and sun, you can expect Keukenhof to be a warm and sunny haven from the gray chill of nearby Amsterdam.
NOT SO.
I don't know what this part of the Netherlands is all about. I'm sure there's a scientific explanation, but I'll settle for the very unscientific warning that it's COLD in these gardens, so bring a coat.
I've seen so many shivering tourists dressed for spring and let's just say the gardens are a little less magical when you're shivering like an overcaffeinated maraca.

7. The free perks are missing
Last but not least, I was surprised to learn that the Keukenhof offers guests a range of free perks, from free WiFi in certain areas to free luggage storage.
Make sure you also use them in the garden... after all, you should get your money's worth 😉

The design of Keukenhof Gardens: a visual journey
If you're still unsure whether to visit Keukenhof, or just want a taste of the floral wonderland that's soon to beguile your senses, here's a short tour of Keukenhof's various pavilions and gardens in 2019.
NOTE: The directions refer to the main entrance and are based on the orientation on the main map that you will receive!
the main pond
One of the prettiest parts of Keukenhof Gardens is the large pond at the top left of the garden, complete with a spectacular fountain and even swans (though Ryan Gosling is sadly absent).
This is also one of the busiest parts of the entire park, so like us, I recommend coming here first!

Gardens, sculptures and exhibitions
Keukenhof consists mostly of outdoor flower displays and a handful of covered pavilions where you can hide from the cold.
Throughout the park, there are all kinds of colorful and perfectly arranged flower beds, benches to rest on, and artworks generously arranged to add interest to the atmosphere.
Look out for the themed Inspirational Gardens. When I was there in 2019 they had a Beatles theme with their own yellow submarine!
These were some of my favorite places:

Wilhelm-Alexander-Pavillon
In the heart of Keukenhof Gardens you will find the Willem Alexander Pavilion, a covered pavilion (and actually the largest in Keukenhof!) filled with all sorts of colorful flowers including tulips, lilies and more.
The variety of tulips you see here is truly amazing.
From brightly colored yellow tulips shaped like a royal crown to fringed variants reminiscent of an elegant cushion, you'll quickly realize that against all odds, tulips can be realAs a matter of factCalled.
In this pavilion you will also find a small cafe seating area (great for Googling those crazy tulips you just saw) and some famous Keukenhof Instagram/photo spots.
Be sure to take a tour of this pavilion - it's easy to miss a lot of good things!

Orange-colored pavilion of Nassau
This pavilion will probably be the first one you visit as you enter through the main entrance and walk straight ahead.
What is special about this pavilion is that it has a small theater where flower shows with many changing flower presentations take place throughout the day. 2019 saw many nods to the flower power theme.
Honest? A lot of these exhibits struck me as a bit gaudy, with bright colors, giant peace signs, and pop art featuring the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Lady Gaga, and John Lennon... as well as a few terracotta warriors and Buddha statues. foreign style.
I certainly liked the displays in some of the other pavilions, but here are some photos so you can judge for yourself:

Beatrice Pavilion
The Beatrix Pavilion, located in the upper right corner of the park (relative to the main entrance) is a real crowd pleaser and hosts the Keukenhof Orchid and Anthurium Show.
In the center of the pavilion you will find a staircase that leads to an observation deck where you can get a bird's eye view of the exhibits, colorful orchids in all sorts of amazing color combinations (including bright turquoise!) and many more beautiful decorations
In 2019 we had bottles filled with flowers, hanging flower baskets hanging from chandeliers and painted bright yellow flower pots.
There were also satisfying displays on the theme such as a classic Volkswagen van in a flower bed and a mannequin display of international ladies in traditional dress!

The mill
The Keukenhof Gardens windmill is on the far right of the park.
Here you can also take an electronic whisper boat (at an additional cost) that will take you on a scenic ride through the nearby tulip fields.

Irenes Pavillon
This is a very fun pavilion in the lower left corner of the garden with a large fountain and a barrel organ that regularly plays different tunes.
When I was there they were playing Lady Gaga's Bad Romance!

Der Juliana-Pavillon
Here you will find an exhibition on the history of the tulip, as well as other beautiful flower displays and a souvenir shop.
In my futile clumsiness I completely missed this part of Keukenhof, but I've heard it's beautiful so be sure to check it out!
Der Wilhelmina-Pavillon
If you're looking for a quaint place to grab a bite, head to the Wilhelmina Pavilion in the top left corner of the park.
Here you will find a large restaurant overlooking the photogenic Keukenhof pond, serving hot meals and coffee/snacks.
On the way here you might see a cute little hut-like structure with a "KEUKENHOF" sign on it. This was actually the old park entrance!
The best photo motifs and Instagram spots in Keukenhof Gardens of 2019
One of the most liberating things about Keukenhof is that everyone is here for the same reason: to flatter in front of all the pretty flowers and snap a dramatic selfie or two.
Of course, this makes Keukenhof a no-judgments zone for those who want to snap shamelessly and drool over every lightbulb.
Unsurprisingly, the park is full of Insta-photo-perfect spots in various pavilions and gardens.
While it's pretty difficult to get an ugly photo anywhere in Keukenhof, there were some great photo opportunities here that I really enjoyed! Some may have been 2019 specific, but others should be available every year based on what I've seen.
Die Keukenhof-Windmühle
With caramel-hued tulips, scattered giant clogs and a tall, imposing windmill, Keukenhof unabashedly pays homage to Holland's most colorful and beloved stereotypes.
For this reason, one of my favorite places to photograph at Keukenhof is the delicate windmill in the park, which provides the perfect quintessentially Dutch focal point for any shot.
You can also climb up to the windmill for a unique view of the gardens, or even take a whisper boat ride around Keukenhof from here.
NOTE: There is also a fun photo in front of the windmill, along the waterfront right next to the footbridge. Look out for a small boat strategically placed for photo purposes, or more specifically, look out for the Instagram model in a ball gown.
The huge wedding dress
Location:Willem-Alexander-Pavillon
For those who want to look as special as possible, there is a huge wedding dress with beautiful flowers to pose in.
Don't worry, you don't have to undress in front of 1.4 million strangers, there's a clever little staircase behind the dress that allows you to stand behind it for that wonderful photo opportunity.

Banner reading LOVE is all you need.
Location:Willem-Alexander-Pavillon
With large light gray letters covered in colorful flowers and a whole row of pots of pink and white flowers dangling beneath each letter, the LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED sign is the perfect spot for a sickeningly adorable photo 😉
The bike with flowers
Location:Between the main entrance and the Oranje Nassau Pavilion
Want to pretend you got some exercise during your dream trip to Keukenhof?
Luckily for you, this cute bike-focused shot is the perfect photo alternative to real sporting activities 😛
You will find it on a path when you exit the main entrance and turn right towards the Oranje Nassau Pavilion.

"Walk on Water"
Location:Am Keukenhof-Teich
A series of circular steps mark the water-walking facility, which is so busy that it's more like "awkwardly waiting in line" in the water, BUT nonetheless, if you reach this part of the pond during rush hour, do it a very good photo.

The Labyrinth Lookout
To the right of the Oranje Nassau Pavilion is a not-too-difficult maze with a raised pavilion in the center.
If you go up here you have a great view of the twists and turns of the maze as well as all the beautiful flower arrangements.
If you go out into the fields, you also have a great view of the sprawling rows of blooming tulips!

Frequently asked questions about Keukenhof Gardens
Do you still have questions about Keukenhof? In this last section I'll address some frequently asked questions, but feel free to ask them in the comments!
Is the Keukenhof worth the price?
I get it: at €18.50 per person for a skip-the-line ticket, Keukenhof isn't exactly cheap...
But once you see the immaculate grounds at this location (and the myriad of gardeners who make sure everything stays perfect), you, like me, might find it a lot easier to justify the price.
Keukenhof is huge and you could easily spend several hours exploring the gardens.
I'm honestly in no rush to revisit Keukenhof but I'm glad I ticked it off my wish list as it was truly a wonderful experience before the crowds came.
If you like gardens I can confidently say that you will love Keukenhof, but if manicured gardens aren't your thing and you're just hoping to see a few sprawling fields of tulips then it's better to hire bikes and cycle around Lisse . .Click here for my guide on how to visit tulip fields for free!
How can I find out what's blooming at Keukenhof?
What's great about Keukenhof is that they purposefully plant flowers that bloom at different times of the season to ensure visitors are amazed by the beautiful arrangements no matter when they visit.
You can monitor the current flowering situation.through this page on the official website.
Are there activities for children at Keukenhof?
Yes many! From what I saw there was a large play area (handy next to a coffee kiosk) so you can enjoy a coffee or beer while the kids have fun.
There is also a maze and lots of fun photo opportunities for the kids.

How much does it cost to eat at Keukenhof?
There is a wide range of food at Keukenhof.
According to a casual observation, the restaurant near the entrance was quite expensive, with burger, fries and beer combos for €17.50, pasta dishes for €11 and paninis for €6.
In other parts of the park you will find food trucks and stands selling fast food. Here I saw that some burgers were sold for 6-7 euros and milkshakes for 5 euros.
I personally had a (mediocre) cappuccino for 2.70. The prices aren't ridiculous, but the quality certainly won't blow you away, so if I were you, I'd bring my own food.
Can I bring my dog to Keukenhof?
At Keukenhof, dogs are allowed on a lead in the gardens, but not in the pavilions.
However, it gets very busy there, so I'm not sure if it's the best idea to bring a dog if it's small or afraid of crowds.
What activities are there at Keukenhof?
Aside from running around like a headless chicken and taking as many photos as you can, there are various activities at Keukenhof that you can enjoy!
In the park you can climb the windmill for a beautiful view, get a ticket for a boat tour of the beautiful tulip fields, have a meal/drink at the various restaurants or have a snack on your self-made picnic walking tour...
And last but not least, you can enjoy the upcoming special events like the annual flower parade.
How much time should I expect at Keukenhof?
Honestly, this answer depends on how good you are with crowds!
We arrived at 8:30am and stayed until 1pm. So we had more than enough time to visit each pavilion, take lots of photos and enjoy a coffee break.
We would have loved to have stayed longer but at that point it was so crowded that we felt stuffy and needed to get out as soon as possible. Anyway, I would plan to stay at Keukenhof for at least half a day.

Do you have further questions about your first visit to Keukenhof?
